Apple is preparing a major MacBook Pro redesign featuring OLED displays and touch-screen support. Expected around October or November 2026, these laptops will use M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. Apple re-engineered the internals to make the machines significantly lighter and slimmer, ensuring they remain easy to carry for users.
Apple is reportedly preparing one of the biggest MacBook Pro redesigns in years. The next generation of its higher-end laptops are expected to get OLED displays and touch-screen support for the first time. But the display may not be the only major change. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says the upcoming MacBook Pro models will also be significantly lighter, with Apple reworking the internals to make the machines easier to carry.
In his latest Power On newsletter, Gurman says Apple has re-engineered the inside of its next MacBook Pro, including miniaturising parts and rearranging components. The idea here is to make the laptop significantly lighter while keeping its high-end positioning. Reports also suggest the new MacBook Pro will have a thinner design, meaning the next-generation models could be both slimmer and noticeably lighter than the current ones.
MacBook Pro might also get OLED display and touch screen
Along with a thinner and lighter body, the new MacBook Pro is also expected to bring OLED technology to the MacBook Pro for the first time. With OLED, the Macs are expected to offer sharper contrast and deeper blacks compared with the current display technology. Apple is also reportedly adding a touch screen, which, if it happens, would be a major change for the Mac after years of touch input being limited to the iPhone and iPad. Gurman says Apple is making changes to macOS Golden Gate to support touch input as well as the Dynamic Island.
Power and other specs
As for the power and what else to expect, reports suggest the next MacBook Pro models will feature Apple’s M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, putting them at the top end of the company’s laptop line-up. Reports also suggest the new machines are being tested with macOS 27.2 and could sit above the existing MacBook Pro models as more premium options.
When is the next-gen MacBook Pro coming?
The launch timing is still not officially confirmed, but the new MacBook Pro is expected to arrive around October or November 2026. Apple is also expected to launch an OLED iPad mini, which is expected between late October and November. The tablet is tipped to get a better display, a faster chip and a landscape-oriented FaceTime camera.
The MacBook Pro redesign also comes at an interesting time for Apple’s design team. According to reports, CEO John Ternus is taking a much more hands-on role in product design, spending considerable time with Apple’s industrial design and human interface teams. Bloomberg says Ternus has been visiting the design studio several times a week, sometimes more than once a day, as he works to rebuild the team’s influence inside Apple.
