One of Earth’s driest places was just covered in snow

The Atacama Desert in Chile got covered in snow after severe weather in August 2026. NASA satellites showed snow reaching the Pacific coast. Atmospheric scientist René Garreaud said precipitation totals reached levels "rarely seen in the otherwise extremely arid region." The storm forced many powerful telescopes to suspend their operations.
