At the India Today Conclave - South 2026, G. Satheesh Reddy, Member of the National Security Advisory Board and former chairman of DRDO, identified hypersonic weapons, quantum technology, advanced manufacturing and propulsion as key technologies India needs to develop over the next decade.
Reddy said India needs to focus on technologies that can give it an edge in future conflicts, starting with hypersonic missiles.
"Hypersonic missile is one technology," he said, explaining that such weapons can travel at around six times the speed of sound within the atmosphere, leaving adversaries with very little reaction time.
He also highlighted quantum technology, including quantum communication, computing, sensors, radar and electronic warfare.
"Quantum technologies will change in a big way," Reddy said.
He also stressed the need for India to become a global manufacturing power, with advanced materials and manufacturing technologies playing a key role.
Finally, he highlighted propulsion systems and said India needs to develop its own advanced aircraft engines.
"I am very confident that having made so many engines now, in the next 10 years, India will have its own engine, 100% sure," Reddy said.
