Growing bacteria line up single-file, then buckle in liquid crystals

Caltech researchers found that bacteria growing in liquid crystal fluids form single-file chains instead of living gels. These chains grow straight until they suddenly buckle in a localized way. Sujit Datta said, "This is an odd version of that problem because this beam is made out of cells that are self-replicating."
