Rahul Gandhi said on Wednesday that 300 MPs will protest at Jantar Mantar against the Election Commission. The opposition leader claimed Gyanesh Kumar is not a legitimate Election Commissioner. Gandhi noted that Delhi Police stopped them earlier, so they moved their protest to the designated site to voice their concerns.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said around 300 MPs from the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha had sought to meet Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar a day earlier, but were not allowed to meet him. Speaking about the opposition's planned protest, Gandhi said the MPs had been stopped by the Delhi Police from protesting at the earlier location and had now decided to move to the designated protest site at Jantar Mantar. "As I said yesterday, around 300 MPs from the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha wanted to meet the CEC yesterday. He did not meet us. The Delhi Police stopped us, and yesterday they said that we cannot protest there," Gandhi said. He said the opposition would gather at Jantar Mantar to press its concerns over the Election Commission and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise. "So, our plan today is to go to the designated protest site, Jantar Mantar, and sit there again and tell the country that, for us, Gyanesh Kumar is not the legitimate Election Commissioner of the country," Gandhi said. The Opposition has been mounting pressure on the Election Commission over the SIR exercise and has questioned the conduct of the poll panel under Gyanesh Kumar.
