What Independence Day means between the tricolour and the traffic lights

Every August 15, India debates the meaning of freedom. While some celebrate national pride, others highlight poverty and inequality. Fieldwork in southern Odisha showed how many Dalits and Adivasis moved past hunger through state rations. As one teacher said, "For someone who has known hunger, that is a concrete freedom."
