Mamata Banerjee avoided naming Rahul Gandhi as the INDIA bloc’s 2029 prime ministerial candidate on Wednesday. When asked about the leadership face, she told a reporter, "You will be the candidate." The opposition alliance met in New Delhi to discuss election concerns and remains united for upcoming democracy marches.

The INDIA bloc's attempt to put up a united front on Wednesday was accompanied by a familiar question: who will lead the opposition alliance into the 2029 Lok Sabha election? The question came up after opposition parties met in New Delhi to discuss their strategy on issues involving the Election Commission and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The meeting may have been focused on the poll panel, but the spotlight soon shifted to the alliance's leadership. Following the meeting, Mamata Banerjee was asked by the media whether Congress leader Rahul Gandhi would be the INDIA bloc's prime ministerial face in 2029. Banerjee chose not to give a straight answer. "You will be the candidate," she told the reporter, before steering the conversation away from the question. "We have a press conference tomorrow, we will tell you then," she added.   #WATCH | Delhi | When asked if Rahul Gandhi will be the PM candidate in 2029, Former West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee chooses to remain silent. Mamata on INDIA Bloc's Unity Former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee asserted that the INDIA bloc is "very much united" as she came down heavily on Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, calling him a 'daku' (dacoit) and demanding his immediate removal after the alliance's key meeting on Wednesday. Addressing a joint press conference with INDIA bloc leaders after their meeting, where they decided to hold joint "save democracy" marches and rallies, Banerjee said the opposition had repeatedly raised the issue of "vote theft" in Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Bihar and West Bengal and expressed concerns over alleged electoral manipulation during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
