Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday completes 25 years of uninterrupted leadership at the helm of government, marking a political journey that began with his taking oath as Gujarat chief minister on October 7, 2001, and continued with three successive terms as prime minister since 2014.
The milestone is being marked by the Bharatiya Janata Party and its NDA allies with events across the country, while the Union Cabinet on Tuesday adopted a resolution hailing Modi's 25-year journey and crediting it to public trust and a governance philosophy centred on "Nation First and Citizen First".
The BJP's celebrations are the culmination of a month-long Seva Sankalp Abhiyan, launched on September 17, Modi's 76th birthday. The campaign has included blood donation drives, cleanliness initiatives, welfare outreach, exhibitions, cultural programmes, social-media campaigns and public participation events.
JOURNEY FROM GUJARAT CM TO INDIA'S PM
PM Modi became Gujarat chief minister on October 7, 2001, and remained in office for more than 12 years before moving to the national stage in 2014. He has since led the NDA to victory in three consecutive Lok Sabha elections.
The Union Cabinet resolution highlighted the continuity between Modi's Gujarat tenure and his years as prime minister, pointing to initiatives such as the SWAGAT grievance-redressal system and Jyotigram as examples of Gujarat experiments that were subsequently taken to the national level. SWAGAT received a UN Public Service Award in 2010, while its governance model was cited as an inspiration for PRAGATI at the Centre.
The resolution also listed welfare delivery, infrastructure expansion, GST, digital payments, defence production, semiconductor manufacturing, renewable energy and scientific achievements among the defining features of Modi's governance.
It cited nearly 60 crore Jan Dhan accounts, more than 4 crore houses, PM-KISAN transfers exceeding Rs 4 lakh crore and the government's claim that 25 crore people have moved out of poverty. It also highlighted UPI, Covid vaccine development, Chandrayaan-3, highway expansion, railway electrification and higher public capital expenditure.
