Counting of votes for the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election started at two centres amid tight security. Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said the BJP might not win, but he expects the Congress to finish in third position. Meanwhile, AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal expressed confidence that his party will see success.

AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal expressed confidence ahead of the Nagaon by-election results, saying, "On result day, there will be smiles on the faces of Ajmal and the UDF. The others will sit and weep." Speaking to ANI, Ajmal also extended his support to the Congress's protest and demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. "We extend our full support to it," he said, adding that "Gyanesh Kumar should resign as soon as possible."

Speaking to reporters on October 8, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, described the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency as a "Congress seat", but declared that the "Congress will finish in third position."

He added that the BJP was "taking a chance" with the by-elections, stating that while the party "may win or lose", the primary goal was to "push Congress to third position."

Counting of votes for the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election in Assam began at two centres amid tight security arrangements, officials said.

In West Bengal, counting also got underway for the Nandigram and Rejinagar Assembly bypolls under tight security. Meanwhile, votes polled in two Assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu and one in Puducherry are also being counted.
