Amarinder Singh Raja Warring arrived in Delhi on Friday and personally submitted his resignation as Punjab Congress chief to Rahul Gandhi. He said, "I decided to submit my resignation to Rahul Gandhi because he was the person who had appointed me." Many leaders are now being considered for the post.

Days after resigning as the chief of Punjab Congress, Amarinder Singh Raja Warring arrived in Delhi on Friday and personally submitted his resignation as Congress' Punjab unit chief to Rahul Gandhi. He reportedly said that he decided to submit his resignation to Rahul Gandhi because he was the person who had appointed him as Punjab Congress chief, adding he was not holding the post because of anyone's favour. On his relationship with the Congress leadership, Warring reportedly said he listens to his own conscience and has already shared everything with his leader, Rahul Gandhi. Warring was replaced just weeks after Sachin Pilot took charge as the AICC in-charge of the state but the writing was on the wall before Pilot's entry on to the scene. Congress leadership was seized of the disgruntlement under Warring even when Bhupesh Baghel was the AICC in-charge as it was regularly in touch with the MPs and other key leaders in Punjab directly. Media reports citing Congress sources said the change was not made earlier as the party was weighing whether changing the state president so close to the polls would be prudent or not. Assembly elections in Punjab are due early next year. While Baghel had repeatedly asserted that Warring would remain as the chief, the unease in the state unit and in the leadership over him continuing was evident. The Congress MPs from Punjab besides Warring were unhappy with his working style and had conveyed their unhappiness with his leadership style to the party top brass. Besides ex-MP Vijay Inder Singla, the names of former Olympian and Jalandhar Cantt MLA Pargat Singh, former MLA Rana KP Singh, Raja Sansi MLA Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria and Gurdaspur MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa are also doing the rounds for the post. The development comes days after the issue of appointing a new Punjab Congress chief was discussed by party top brass Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahu Gandhi, K C Venugopal and Pilot at a meeting.
