Delhi police detained over 500 people on Sunday amid protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Demonstrators in New Delhi and Mumbai demanded his removal and the suspension of electoral roll revisions. "You can control institutions, but the streets belong to us," said Uddhav Thackeray during the ongoing agitation.
The Delhi police detained more than 500 people on Sunday after clashes with protesters seeking the removal of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar and the suspension of the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
"Police cracked down on the growing protest by the end of the long weekend, making this our top story today," says Suresh Nambath, Editor, The Hindu. "Opposition leaders hope to continue the momentum as the week begins, pitching this issue as critical to Indian democracy."
As the agitation entered its third day, with demonstrations continuing in New Delhi and Mumbai, the protesters included leaders of Opposition parties, civil society activists, and members of youth and student organisations. Screenwriter and director Saeed Akhtar Mirza, 83, took part in a wheelchair. All India Students' Association president Neha Bora was allegedly picked up from the protest by police in a private car and was later released from a police station 50 km away.
As protesters tried to reach the Jantar Mantar protest site, they were stopped at Ashoka Road by the Delhi Police, who had heavily barricaded the area and detained around 500 people.
In Mumbai, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray led a march also seeking the CEC's removal and the scrapping of the SIR. The Shiv Sena (UBT) chief described the CEC as a "weapon" in the hands of the BJP and claimed that the ruling party was using him to "take away the right to vote".
"You can control institutions, but the streets belong to us," he said, adding that the removal of "around 13 crore names" from draft rolls across the country amounted to disenfranchisement.
