The Mini Vidhana Soudha in Kalaburagi witnessed a show of strength by the Congress and BJP-JD(S) alliance on Monday as candidates of both parties filed their nominations for the Legislative Council's North-East Teachers' constituency, setting the stage for a high-voltage electoral contest.
Congress candidate Sharanappa Mattur filed his nomination papers before Returning Officer and Regional Commissioner Zaheera Naseem at her office. Medical Education Minister Sharan Prakash Patil, Radhakrishna Doddamani, Kalaburagi MP, MLAs Allamprabhu Patil and Kaneez Fatima and other Congress leaders and party workers were present on the occasion.
Earlier, the BJP-JD(S) alliance candidate Shashil Namoshi filed his nomination papers before Ms. Naseem. Former Chief Minister and senior BJP leader B.S. Yediyurappa arrived in Kalaburagi to extend his support to Mr. Namoshi and to participate in the nomination filing. Former Minister Bandeppa Kashempur, Umesh Jadhav, former MP, and other BJP leaders and workers accompanied him.
The Mini Vidhana Soudha premises were crowded with supporters of both parties, reflecting the heightened political activity surrounding the election. Party workers raised slogans and gathered in large numbers as the two candidates submitted their papers, turning the nomination process into a show of organisational strength.
The election to the North-East Teachers' constituency scheduled for October 23 is expected to witness an intense contest, with both sides seeking to consolidate their support among the teaching community across the region.
