The Congress announced the appointments on Friday as part of an organisational: Reporters

NEW DELHI: The BJP on Sunday criticised the Congress's appointment of Aradhana Misra-Mona as its Uttar Pradesh unit president and Imran Masood as working president, saying the choices reflected a widening gap between Mahatma Gandhi and the Gandhi family.

Speaking to the media, BJP MP and national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi said, "On the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, who is a symbol of peace and non-violence, Congress has appointed Imran Masood, who is infamous for his remark that he will 'chop Modi into pieces', as the party's Uttar Pradesh unit working president."

Trivedi also alleged that Mona had once stopped Congress workers from raising the "Bharat Mata ki Jai" slogan and asked them to chant "Congress zindabaad" instead."This demonstrates how vast the gap has become between Mahatma Gandhi and the Gandhis of today," he said.

The Congress announced the appointments on Friday as part of an organisational reshuffle ahead of next year's Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh.

Mona, daughter of Congress Rajya Sabha MP Pramod Tiwari, replaces Ajay Rai, who had headed the state unit since August 2023. Lok Sabha member Imran Masood was named working president.

The party also appointed Chaudhary Virendra Singh as leader of the Congress Legislature Party, a post previously held by Mona.

Trivedi criticised the Gandhi family over what he described as its "silence" on Indian pilot Smit Machchhar, who thwarted his co-pilot's alleged attempt to crash a Tel Aviv-bound flydubai aircraft carrying 174 people.

The BJP Rajya Sabha member called it the family's "silent support to terrorism" and demanded a response from the Congress leadership.

Referring to Sonia Gandhi's alleged tears for the accused killed in the Batla House encounter, he claimed she had shown no compassion for Captain Machchhar."The 'princess' (Priyanka Gandhi Vadra) who used to carry a bag bearing the Palestinian cause has failed to produce even a handkerchief of sympathy from it," he said.

"Rahul Gandhi, the 'wayward prince' of the Gandhi family who was once so distressed over Gaza, seems to be so 'terrified of the vote bank' that he is not able to utter a single word to hail the valour of Machchhar," Trivedi charged.

"I feel that the entire country should view the conduct of the Congress's top leadership very seriously," he said, adding that its conduct raised "many questions".
