The Supreme Court on Monday refused to stay the first information report (FIR) registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to probe allegations of corruption linked to the Punjab chief minister’s office (CMO).

The FIR was registered after the CBI conducted raids at eight locations, including the camp office of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and the Chandigarh residence of his Officer on Special Duty (OSD), Rajbir Singh Ghuman.

A bench of Justices MM Sundresh and PB Varale heard the matter after senior advocate Vikas Singh, appearing for the Punjab government, sought a stay on the FIR. The bench declined the request, saying, “We will not stay FIR. No coercive steps may be taken."

The raids, conducted on October 6, also drew an unusual public response in Sangrur, Mann’s home district. Villagers welcomed the CBI team with dhol beats and showers of flowers as it arrived at Ghuman’s residence, CNN-News18 journalist Arun Dhanta reported.

Justice Nagu’s Recusation

The Punjab government approached the Supreme Court on October 6, challenging the Punjab and Haryana High Court’s decision to direct a CBI probe into allegations of corruption linked to the Punjab CMO. The appeal was filed on the same day the agency conducted raids at multiple locations in connection with the case.
