The Supreme Court refused to meet a parliamentary panel regarding the ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal. The court said the issue "may not be desirable" to discuss because the Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill, 2024 could face judicial review later. Senior judges decided that such an interaction would not be appropriate.

A communication from the secretary general of the Supreme Court to the committee said the proposal for an informal discussion on the matter was discussed among the senior judges.

The Supreme Court has refused to join the proposed meeting with the parliamentary panel on the ‘One Nation, One Election’ mechanism, saying the proposed amendment may become a subject matter of judicial review and it may not be desirable to discuss the issue, sources told CNN-News18.

The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) had proposed an “informal discussion" with the Chief Justice of India and other senior SC judges during its scheduled visit to the top court on October 6.

However, the proposal was discussed among senior judges, following which the decision was taken that such an interaction would not be appropriate, according to people aware of the developments.

A communication from the SC Secretary General to the panel said it might not be desirable to discuss the issue on the administrative side, sources said. The communication also noted that the Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill, 2024 could subsequently become a matter of judicial review and, therefore, discussing its provisions with sitting judges in such a forum would not be appropriate.

What is the ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal?

The ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal seeks to synchronise elections to the Lok Sabha and all state Legislative Assemblies, so that they are held together rather than at different points of the five-year electoral cycle. The Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill, 2024 and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024 were introduced in the Lok Sabha in December 2024 and are currently being examined by the JPC.
