High Commissioner to Dhaka Dinesh Trivedi met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, to discuss bilateral ties. Officials restarted talks for Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s visit to India after a brief disruption. India said it wants to build a constructive and forward looking relationship with Bangladesh.

As India and Bangladesh negotiate about Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's visit to India, High Commissioner to Dhaka Dinesh Trivedi held a "very good" and "long" meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday (October 7, 2026), according to a source in the PMO.

Mr. Trivedi, who took charge at his current post in June, is on a three-day visit to Delhi for consultations. The source did not share any details of his conversation with Mr. Modi. The meeting took place even as the Ministry of External Affairs reiterated that India wants to build a "constructive and forward looking" relationship with Bangladesh.

'Hasina is biggest challenge'

India and Bangladesh were in the middle of talks to plan Mr. Rahman's proposed trip to New Delhi when their dialogue was disrupted by deposed Bangladeshi PM Sheikh Hasina's first press interaction on August 5, leading to some sharp words from Dhaka. After a gap of several weeks, however, the two sides have restarted talks for a visit from the Bangladesh PM.

Earlier this week, Bangladesh Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kobir described the activities of Ms. Hasina and her party, the Awami League, in India as the "principal challenge" in planning Mr. Rahman's visit to India.

Responding to his comments, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal reiterated on Wednesday that India is committed to building a "constructive and forward looking" relationship with Bangladesh.

Fraught history

In the eight months since he was sworn in as PM, Mr. Rahman has visited Malaysia and China, and participated in the UN General Assembly earlier in September. Sources in Bangladesh's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said he is expected to visit Japan for four days later this month. However, there is lingering uncertainty over his plans to visit India as the two sides are yet to connect at the highest level since he came to power.

After brief disruption, officials restart talks for Bangladesh PM Tarique Rahman's India visit

India-Bangladesh ties nosedived in August 2024 when Ms. Hasina's government was toppled by a mass uprising led by students. The chaotic overthrow of Ms. Hasina was followed by fifteen months of interim rule under Professor Muhammad Yunus and his team of advisers.

India made an early outreach to Mr. Rahman during this period, trying to build bridges, and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met him on October 31, 2025 during the funeral of former PM Khaleda Zia. After the Bangladesh Nationalist Party's landslide victory in the 2026 general election, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri visited Dhaka on February 17 for Mr. Rahman's swearing-in ceremony.

Despite such outreaches and two invitations - one for a bilateral meet and another for the latest BRICS summit - India has not yet featured in Mr. Rahman's travel calendar.
