Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) activists on Monday visited Parliament Street Police Station, asking Delhi Police to provide a date for their proposed protest at Jantar Mantar. The activists gave the police 24 hours to respond.
Speaking to reporters outside the police station, CJP Spokesperson Saurav Das said the party was allowing the police to decide when the demonstration could take place.
“Police tell everyone to approach them 10 days in advance. We are now saying that they have the choice to tell us the date and time (for protest at Jantar Mantar). We are giving them a 24-hour ultimatum," Das told reporters.
CJP leader Ashutosh Ranka said the party would formally seek a date from Delhi Police and expressed hope that the authorities would respond within the stipulated time.
“We are going to ask Delhi Police for a date to hold a protest at Jantar Mantar. We hope the police will give us a date. If they do not, we will make another call within 24 hours…" Ranka said.
INDIA Bloc Plans March To Supreme Court
The meeting at the police station comes as the INDIA bloc prepares to hold a protest march from Connaught Place to the Supreme Court against the Election Commission.
Lok Sabha Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi has called for a “Chalo Dilli" march, scheduled to begin this afternoon. The protest is set to target the functioning of the Election Commission and will go ahead despite the Chief Justice of India not giving his assent to a meeting with Opposition MPs on the issue.
Gandhi has also called a news conference regarding the protest. In a post on X, he said, “March for Democracy. March for Justice. Chalo Dilli."
Security Tightened Across Central Delhi
Heavy security arrangements have been put in place across Central Delhi ahead of the planned march. Barricades have been set up at multiple locations, while entry and exit at certain metro stations will remain closed until 4:00 PM on October 12 for security reasons.
Security personnel have been deployed along Barakhamba Road, near Mandi House. Delhi Police personnel are being joined by the Rapid Action Force (RAF) and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
