The maximum permissible speed on the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra-Banihal section rose from 75 kmph to 100 kmph. Vande Bharat trains successfully crossed the Chenab and Anji bridges at this new speed. MoS Railways V Somanna said, "The aim is to eventually raise speeds to 130 kmph and even 160 kmph."

Speed Jump

The maximum permissible speed on the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra-Banihal section has risen sharply from 75 kmph to 100 kmph. The 111-km stretch could now deliver faster journeys through Jammu and Kashmir, with officials indicating that speeds may rise further.

Bridge Test

Vande Bharat trains have successfully crossed both the Chenab railway bridge and the Anji cable-stayed bridge at 100 kmph. The test marks a key step for faster train operations on a route built through some of the region's most challenging terrain.

160 Target

The current 100 kmph limit may not be the final number. MoS Railways V Somanna said the aim is to eventually raise speeds to 130 kmph and even 160 kmph, signalling a much faster future for trains operating across Jammu and Kashmir.

Faster Kashmir

The speed upgrade is expected to improve operations on the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link. For passengers, the immediate promise is shorter travel time and faster movement between Katra and Banihal, with further speed increases being considered.

Supply Lifeline

The railway line is about more than passenger travel. Somanna highlighted its role in moving milk, foodgrains and other essential supplies, saying more than 25,000 tonnes are being sent from the region to different parts of the country.
