Domestic institutional investors bought shares worth ₹30,313 crore during the week ended October 9, offsetting foreign selling of ₹30,294 crore. This support helped the Sensex and Nifty snap an eight-week losing streak. While foreign investors sold equities every day, domestic buying provided a strong push, helping markets gain nearly 1% overall.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold Indian equities worth ₹30,294 crore on a net basis during the week ended October 9, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) bought shares worth ₹30,313 crore, provisional exchange data showed.

On Friday, FIIs were net sellers of ₹3,568.90 crore, while DIIs bought equities worth ₹4,743.26 crore. This resulted in net institutional inflows of ₹1,174.36 crore for the session.

FIIs purchased shares worth ₹10,373.99 crore and sold ₹13,942.89 crore during Friday's session. DIIs bought equities worth ₹15,626.53 crore and sold ₹10,883.27 crore.

FII and DII activity from October 5 to 9

FIIs were net sellers in each of the five trading sessions during the week, with outflows reaching ₹12,943.58 crore on October 8. DIIs provided consistent support, with their strongest net buying of ₹10,703.11 crore also recorded on October 8.

Over the week, FIIs purchased equities worth ₹65,610.73 crore and sold ₹95,904.02 crore. DIIs, meanwhile, bought shares worth ₹95,434.53 crore and sold ₹65,122.06 crore.

Sensex, Nifty snap eight-week losing streak

The institutional flows came as Indian equity benchmarks snapped an eight-week losing streak, supported by a strong rally on Friday.

The Sensex and Nifty gained nearly 1% each over the week, while the Nifty Bank index rose more than 1%. The midcap index ended the week largely unchanged.

Sectoral performance was mixed. Metal, realty and power stocks were among the biggest laggards, with sectoral indices falling by up to 4%. Capital markets, FMCG and PSU banks led the gains, rising by up to 3%.

On the Nifty, 30 stocks ended the week with losses of up to 7%. Adani Enterprises, Max Healthcare, JSW Steel, Hindalco Industries and Bharat Electronics were among the biggest losers.

Trent, BSE, Kotak Mahindra Bank, TCS, Bharti Airtel and ITC were among the top gainers.
