Is a heatwave really a wave of heat?

A heatwave isn't a wave of heat moving through the air, but rather a period of intense heat that spreads and overwhelms. This happens when the sun is high, a stable high-pressure system traps warm air, and dry winds blow. Meteorologists sometimes prefer calling it a "heat event."
