In 1881, Judge Owen Denny shipped 60 Chinese pheasants to America because he liked their meat. Many birds died during the difficult journey to Oregon, but survivors helped start a wild population. A second shipment in 1882 to the Willamette Valley finally led to the first successful introduction in America.
