Gabion walls to shield Ranganathittu islands from erosion

Authorities started building gabion walls at Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary to shield 25 river islands from erosion. These structures use stones in wire mesh. Previously, sandbags failed, causing damage. "Whenever large quantities of water were released from KRS, the islands protected by sandbags suffered erosion and damage," said officials.
