Deep in the forests of Sulawesi, Indonesia, a snake of almost unbelievable size has rewritten the record books. Late in 2025, a female reticulated python was carefully measured at 7.22 metres, 23 feet 8 inches, making her the longest wild snake ever formally authenticated.
If someone stretches her out across a soccer goal, she would nearly cover the full distance between the posts. Lay ordinary shopping carts end to end and she would take up more than six of them. The discovery has left wildlife experts and conservationists astonished.
The measurement that made history
The python, now known as Ibu Baron, "The Baroness" tipped the scales at 96.5 kilograms, or about 213 pounds. That is roughly the weight of a full-grown giant panda. The figure is even more impressive because she had not eaten recently; after a large meal her weight could easily have climbed past 100 kilograms. The measurements were taken with rice-sack scales and a careful length recording that Guinness World Records later reviewed and accepted.
There is one intriguing caveat. Experts know that a snake's body can stretch at least 10 percent farther when fully relaxed under anaesthesia.
In Ibu Baron's case that would push her closer to 7.9 metres, or around 26 feet. The team chose not to put the healthy animal under, citing both risk and ethical concerns. Even without that extra length, the recorded 7.22 metres stands as the new official mark for a wild snake.
The people who kept her safe
When news of the giant python first surfaced in December 2025, local conservationist Budi Purwanto moved quickly. He rescued the snake from the people who had first encountered her and brought her into the modest sanctuary he runs for large pythons that risk conflict with villagers. Wildlife guide and snake handler Diaz Nugraha, a respected rescuer from Borneo, and nature photographer Radu Frentiu traveled to Sulawesi to help document her size with scientific care. Together they made sure Ibu Baron survived the sudden attention and that the measurements were solid enough for the record books. Purwanto's sanctuary serves a practical purpose. It offers refuge to snakes that would otherwise be killed on sight, reducing danger for both the animals and the people living nearby.
A difficult life for giant snakes
Life is hard for reticulated pythons of this size in Sulawesi. Residents often fear them as threats to livestock and, occasionally, to people. Fatalities have been recorded in the past. Large snakes are regularly killed when they appear near villages, and many are also hunted for bushmeat. Although reticulated pythons are not venomous, their sheer strength allows them to constrict and suffocate prey with ease.
As reported by GWR, Bornean wildlife rescuer Diaz Nugraha explained the growing tension: "Appearances of these giant snakes are increasing because their habitats are reducing and availability of the snake's natural food [such as wild pigs and wild anoa cattle] is decreasing likely as the result of poaching, meaning pythons are coming into contact with people more often than in the past." The illegal pet trade adds another layer of pressure on these iconic reptiles.
The previoulys longest scientifically measured wild reticulated python
The previous longest scientifically measured wild reticulated python in recent decades was a 6.95-metre female found in East Kalimantan, Borneo, in 1999. That snake came to attention after swallowing a sun bear fitted with a tracking device. Ibu Baron has now clearly surpassed that mark.
According to the documentation accepted by Guinness World Records, the Sulawesi python's combination of verified length, careful handling, and transparent measurement process sets a new benchmark. For the moment, at least, the title of longest wild snake belongs to a quiet giant living under the protection of a small sanctuary in Maros.
