Rajinikanth revealed why he agreed to make Jailer 2 despite turning down sequel proposals for Baasha and Petta. He said, “I’m generally not keen on sequels because I feel they take the first part, add a little extra flavour.” Rewatching Jailer on OTT convinced him the story had room for more.

Rajinikanth has revealed why he agreed to make Jailer 2 despite turning down sequel proposals for two of his popular films, Baasha and Petta. The superstar, who is gearing up for the film’s October 15 release, said he is generally not keen on sequels. However, rewatching Jailer after its OTT release changed his mind. With Nelson Dilipkumar returning as director and several popular actors joining the cast, Jailer 2 is among the most anticipated films of the season. Here’s why Rajinikanth agreed to return for the sequel, produced by Sun Pictures and featuring music by Anirudh Ravichander.

Rajinikanth has revealed why he was not interested in working two of his films, Baasha and Petta, despite receiving one-liner for sequels. The actor said he generally does not favour sequels because he feels filmmakers tend to take the elements that worked in the original and add more commercial touches to the follow-up.

He said “I’m generally not keen on sequels because I feel they take the first part, add a little extra flavour, and turn it into another film. I was approached for Baasha 2, and Karthik Subbaraj also came to me with a story for Petta 2, which would have extended Vijay Sethupathi’s character. But I wasn’t interested in either sequel.”

The actor’s approach changed when he watched Jailer after its OTT release. While watching the film again, he felt that the story had left enough room for another instalment.

“After Jailer was released on OTT, I watched the film again. Towards the end, when I am about to kill Varma, he warns me that he has a huge network and that they won’t spare me. Also, Jailer has three containers worth Rs 1,000 crore. So, I felt there was a perfect story for a sequel,” he said.

Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, Jailer 2 will see Rajinikanth reprise his role as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian. Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu and Mirnaa are among the returning cast members, while Hrithik Roshan, Vidya Balan, SJ Suryah, Mithun Chakraborty, Vidya Balan, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Anna Rajan and Jatin Sarna are new additions. Fans are comparing the film's first glimpses to the popular Hollywood web series Breaking Bad.
