Nani and director Srikanth Odela addressed the controversial “single shot actress” scene in their new film, The Paradise. Odela said the mother’s comment reflected poverty, not malice. Nani added, “The payoff of that scene looks really good on paper.” They admitted editing issues broke the connection between the intended setup.

Nani’s recently released film The Paradise is showing solid earnings at the box office despite mixed reactions from audiences. Amid the film’s theatrical run, a particular scene featuring Kayadu Lohar has started a discussion among audience. The sequence involving her character Subbalakshmi and the “single shot actress” reference has been criticised for its portrayal of the character and its place within the film’s theme and story. As the discussion continues, Srikanth Odela has now opened up about the scene and what led to its final presentation.

In a recent discussion on YT 18's Youtube Channel, Srikanth Odela mentioned that the mother’s comment was not intended to be dismissive or exploitative. He said the character’s circumstances were shaped by poverty and her lack of faith in her daughter’s ambition to become an actress. “There is no food at home. Nothing at all. The father has left. Those reels and cameras are the only things they have as a means of support. When you have nothing, when there is literally no other way to put food on the table, the daughter uses the one skill she has. And the mother, who has no alternative to offer, facilitates it. Not because she wants to. Because there is nothing else,” Odela said.

He said that Subbalakshmi had left home to pursue acting but returned without achieving her goal. “The idea was that the mother is saying, ‘You ran away from home. Had you pursued acting properly, you could have been a great artiste.’ That is what I meant to convey through that scene. But it got communicated differently on screen. The setup just was not right in the movie.”

Nani agreed with the director and said how the scene’s original setup was connected to its payoff. “The payoff of that scene looks really good on paper. The setup we had written was strong. But during the editing process, the connection between the setup and the payoff broke. The payoff stopped making sense without the setup that was supposed to precede it. That is one of the issues with the film,” he said. The Paradise also stars Mohan Babu, Sonali Kulkarni and Raghav Juyal, with music by Anirudh Ravichander.
