Nana Patekar’s journey from earning Rs 35 a month as a teenager to commanding over Rs 1 crore for a film in the 1990s is a striking story. He started painting cinema posters at 13. “I was just 13 years old,” he said, recalling how he walked to work daily.
Nana Patekar's journey from earning just Rs 35 a month as teenager to commanding over Rs 1 crore for a film in the 1990s is one of the more striking financial stories in Bollywood.
Veteran actor Nana Patekar, who passed away at 75, had a career spanning more than four decades, with some of Indian cinema’s most memorable performances in films such as Parinda, Krantiveer, Agni Sakshi, Khamoshi, Ab Tak Chhappan and Welcome.
But before becoming one of the most respected actors in Hindi and Marathi cinema, Patekar had experienced severe financial hardship. His journey from earning just Rs 35 a month as a teenager to commanding more than Rs 1 crore for a film in the 1990s is one of the more striking financial stories in Bollywood.
Nana Patekar Earned Rs 35 A Month At 13
Patekar himself recalled that he started working when he was just 13 years old. In a 1998 interview with Rediff, the actor said he painted cinema posters and earned a daily meal and Rs 35 as his pay. “I was just 13 years old" when he started painting cinema posters, Patekar said, recalling a period when he would walk several kilometres to work.
He also described those years as a difficult period in his life, saying that people tended to treat someone without money as a burden. Patekar worked for Rs 35 a month and walked about 8 km to his workplace in Chunabhatti while helping support his family.
From Theatre To Films
Patekar’s eventual entry into acting came through theatre before he moved into films. He made his film debut with Gaman and subsequently built a reputation for playing intense, unconventional characters.
His breakthrough came with films such as Ankush and Parinda. His performance in Krantiveer earned him the National Film Award for Best Actor, while his work in Agni Sakshi further strengthened his position as one of the industry’s leading performers.
The rise in his professional standing was accompanied by a dramatic increase in his remuneration.
Nana Patekar’s Film Fee Touched Rs 1.25 Crore In The 1990s
By the mid-1990s, Patekar had become one of the highest-paid actors in Hindi cinema. Patekar’s asking price after the success of Agni Sakshi had reportedly reached Rs 1.25 crore per film. At the time, this put him second only to Amitabh Bachchan in terms of film remuneration in Hindi cinema.
That figure is particularly striking when viewed against the Rs 35 he earned as a teenager.
It also shows how Patekar’s financial rise was closely linked to his reputation as an actor rather than to the conventional Bollywood route of becoming a commercial leading man from the beginning of his career.
How Much Was Nana Patekar Worth?
There is no publicly verified figure for Patekar’s net worth available from an audited financial disclosure. However, several media reports have put his wealth in the range of several tens of crores. A Times of India report, published in January 2025, estimated his net worth at around Rs 80 crore and reported that he could earn Rs 2-3 crore per film.
It is important to note that these figures are estimates, not independently verified financial data. Unlike publicly listed businesspeople or corporate executives, actors generally do not disclose a consolidated statement of their assets, investments, properties and liabilities.
What is better established is the scale of Patekar’s earnings during his peak years and his long career in films, theatre and other creative work.
Nana Patekar’s Simple Lifestyle
Despite his financial success, Patekar was known for maintaining a relatively understated lifestyle. Patekar himself joked about the idea of owning a Mercedes, saying that he would look like the driver rather than the owner. The remark reflected the image he cultivated of himself as someone uncomfortable with excessive displays of wealth.
A more recent anecdote also highlighted this approach. Screenwriter Ranbir Pushp, who worked with Patekar on Agni Sakshi, recently recalled that the actor had once decided against buying a luxury car worth Rs 1.5 crore and instead chose to have the money distributed among families affected by farmer suicides.
A Significant Part Of His Wealth Went Towards Charity
Patekar’s relationship with money was also shaped by his philanthropic work. In 2015, he joined hands with Marathi actor Makarand Anaspure to establish NAAM Foundation, which was created in response to the drought and farmer-suicide crisis in Maharashtra.
According to NAAM Foundation, the organisation works on issues including water conservation, restoration of village water infrastructure and support for families affected by farmer suicides. Patekar remains listed as the organisation’s chairman.
Patekar had spoken publicly about using his resources to help farmers. In an interview with Governance Now, he recalled having around Rs 1-1.5 crore with him when he decided to provide assistance to families of farmers who had died by suicide.
His philanthropy was not limited to NAAM Foundation. Patekar declined his remuneration for the film Paathshaala and instead asked the producers to issue cheques in the names of charitable organisations.
From Rs 35 To Crores: Nana Patekar’s Financial Journey
Patekar’s financial journey is therefore less about a single net-worth number and more about the extraordinary change in his earning power over his lifetime. At 13, he was earning Rs 35 while painting cinema posters. Several decades later, his fee stood at Rs 1.25 crore per film in 1996.
Over a career that stretched across more than 40 years, he worked as an actor, director and writer and built a substantial body of work in both Hindi and Marathi cinema.
But Patekar’s financial legacy cannot be separated from how he chose to use his earnings. From refusing remuneration for some projects to supporting farmers and building NAAM Foundation, the actor repeatedly channelled part of his resources towards causes outside the film industry.
Veteran actor NanaPatekar passed away at 5:20 AM today after suffering a severe cardiac arrest at his residence. Despite 45 minutes of continuous CPR, he could not be revived. A medico-legal case (MLC) has been registered, and a post-mortem will be conducted in Manipal Hospital.
