Actor Imran Khan got detained by Mumbai police on Saturday, October 10, during a protest at August Kranti Maidan. He joined hundreds supporting the Cockroach Janta Party’s demand for the CEC’s resignation. Imran said, "I am here as a citizen, as a person who lives in this city." Police released him.

Imran Khan, with his cousin sister Zayn Marie Khan and girlfriend Lekha Washington, attended the August Kranti Maidan along with hundreds. He was there to support the Cockroach Janta Party's (CJP) call demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar. On Saturday, October 10, citizens of Mumbai, Delhi and other states participated in their respective protests. Mumbai police detained around 400 people. Imran, Lekha and Zayn were among them. The actor shared a selfie from the detention van.

By the end of Saturday, the police released detainees from the detention centres. In Delhi, CJP leaders were still detained. A video went viral later last evening where Imran could be heard saying ‘Jai Hind’ to the police.

What did Imran Khan say at CJP Protest in Mumbai?

Moments before entering the detention van, Imran interacted with reporters at August Kranti Maidan and said he was not present with any specific demands but had come forward in his capacity as a citizen of Mumbai. The actor added that he wanted to understand why freedom of movement was being restricted and why people's voices were being suppressed.

"I don't have demands. I am here as a citizen, as a person who lives in this city. I am here to see why freedom of movement is being restricted. Why are people's voices being suppressed? That is why I am here," Khan said.

The Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na actor further stated that he was not affiliated with any organisation and was participating in an individual capacity. Imran added, "I don't have any right to demand anything from people. I am not a part of any organisation. I will stand as a representative."

What happened in Mumbai on October 10?

According to ANI, over 400 people were detained in the city during the protest. The FIR has been registered under Sections 223 (disobedience to an order), 126(2) (wrongful restraint), 189(2) (unlawful assembly), 189(3) and 189(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The Mumbai Police confirmed the development.

The report further stated that Tushar Gandhi, great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, called the protest in support of the CJP's demand for the resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar amid a row over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Hundreds of people were detained at August Kranti Maidan, the proposed protest venue, and Nana Chowk in the vicinity. Tushar was also detained.
