Former American Idol contestant, Caleb Flynn, has been found guilty of killing his wife, Ashley Flynn, in Ohio. Prosecutors argued the 40-year-old former music pastor killed the 37-year-old teacher and volleyball coach and staged the scene to make it look like an intruder was responsible, and he was convicted. Ashley was shot by an unknown burglar inside their Tipp City home, Flynn said. Prosecutors presented evidence of his affair, text messages, electronic activity and alleged inconsistencies in his story. Flynn choked up when the verdict was read and he now faces life in prison without parole.

Caleb Flynn found guilty on all counts

Flynn was found guilty of all nine counts, including aggravated murder, murder, felony murder, felonious assault and tampering with evidence. When the verdict was read, Flynn was reportedly shaking his head and crying before being led from the courtroom in handcuffs. Days of testimony concluded with the jury deliberating for about two to three hours.

The case stemmed from the February 16 death of Ashley Flynn, who was found inside the couple's home with two gunshot wounds to the head. Flynn had called 911 and told them that someone had broken into the house and shot his wife.

Prosecutors challenged the Intruder's version

Prosecutors said the alleged home invasion was made up and Flynn tried to change the scene of the crime to fit his story. At trial, evidence showed investigators found no clear evidence that an unknown intruder entered the home. Prosecutors also cited the condition of the garage-side door and the open centre console of Flynn's truck, where he had allegedly stored a handgun. The firearm has not been found.

Flynn told police at first that he had been lying in his daughters' bedroom when he heard the shots. Later he said he saw the garage door open and Ashley was in the bedroom. Prosecutors pointed to inconsistencies in Flynn's accounts, including information he later provided to investigators and his former girlfriend.

Affair and messages became key evidence

A large part of the prosecution's case was built around Flynn's relationship with Alleigha Botner, 24, who he met when she was an intern at his church. Botner spent two days on the stand talking about their relationship, reading portions of their long text message conversation in court. Flynn wanted to break up his marriage and continue his relationship with Botner, prosecutors said.

Some messages read to the trial included Flynn professing hatred toward his wife and discussing ways to kill her without going to jail. One of the messages cited during the proceedings read: "I just want her dead and gone."

Prosecutors also played a message that Flynn is said to have sent to Botner, just before Ashley's death, that he had chosen her and that he would be free. Prosecutors said the messages showed motive and intent.

Digital evidence also presented

Another key part of the prosecution's case was electronic activity from Flynn's devices. Investigators showed evidence from his iPhone and Apple Watch that suggested activity at the time of Ashley's death. A digital forensics examiner testified that the devices recorded steps in the time period before Flynn placed the 911 call.

Prosecutors also said Flynn deleted several apps from his phone before Ashley died, including Instagram and an AI music-generation app related to his relationship with Botner. They also played a song allegedly written by Flynn about his affair that was AI-generated. In court, Botner explained the meaning of the song and its lyrics, which became a memorable part of the trial.

Defence says no physical evidence

Flynn's lawyers challenged the prosecution's interpretation of the evidence, saying investigators had not proved that he was the person who pulled the trigger. Flynn's defence lawyer Patrick Mulligan highlighted the fact that the alleged murder weapon was missing and said Flynn's infidelity did not prove he killed his wife.

The defence also argued that some of Flynn's hostile messages on Ashley may have been relevant to his relationship with Botner.

After the verdict, Mulligan said the defence respected the jury system but was disappointed with the outcome. "I expect a sentence appeal," he said.

Flynn is scheduled to be sentenced October 5 and faces a possible life sentence without parole. His defence is expected to appeal after sentencing. In a statement released after the verdict, Ashley's family said they saw the decision as accountability for her death, but acknowledged no verdict could bring her back or erase the grief of her family and two daughters.

American Idol connection of Caleb Flynn

The murder trial also brought renewed focus to Flynn's short time on American Idol. Flynn appeared in the 12th season of the singing competition in 2013 and performed in front of the judges Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and Randy Jackson. He won a golden ticket to Hollywood, but didn't make it to the main competition.

Flynn said during his appearance that he loved music and his wife, who encouraged him to audition. More than a decade later, his brief TV appearance is now part of the public record surrounding a case that has led to a murder conviction.
