Former American Idol contestant Caleb Flynn has been sentenced to life in prison without parole for murdering his wife, Ashley Flynn. Despite being convicted on nine counts, the Ohio man, who is also a pastor, has maintained his innocence. A 40-year-old Ohio man, who was once a contestant on the music show American Idol, has been sentenced to life in prison on Monday (October 5) for his wife's murder. Caleb Flynn was sent to jail without the possibility of parole. When the judgment was announced, Flynn apologised to his two daughters, 10 and 12, and his late wife's family. He kept asserting that he did not kill her. A jury found him guilty of nine counts related to her death.
"I will continue to fight for my innocence as long as the Lord allows me to. I did not kill my wife," he said, CNN reported. Flynn and his late wife ran a church where he met a 20-year-old intern, Alleigha Botner. He started an affair with the 16-year-younger woman and started planning his wife's murder.
Here's all you need to know about the case.
'Music is all I know'
The 40-year-old appeared in season 12 of the music show, American Idol, in 2013. He sang in the audition round in Chicago before judges Mariah Carey, Randy Jackson and Nicki Minaj. He was not selected for the main competition. During the televised audition, he said he was passionate about music. "It's what I live to do, and I love to sing," he had said, the Associated Press reported.
He added that his wife supported him and encouraged him to follow his passion for music. "I love my wife more than anything," he had said, adding: "She's very, very pretty. Oof, I love her."
'Trying to think of ways to kill her'
Caleb Flynn was having an affair with a 16-year-younger woman at the time of his wife's murder. His lover, Alleigha Botner, testified in court, where she said Flynn hated his wife. She claimed he had shared the thought of murdering his wife multiple times. Botner told the court that she met Flynn in 2022, when she was 20 years old and an intern at his church. She and Flynn carried on an affair for over a year.
She gave details of the candid conversation Flynn had with her where he used to talk about how he wanted his wife dead.
"He told me that he hates her. He told me the only reason that he's still with her is because of the girls," Botner said in court. She was seen sobbing inside the courtroom while showing some of the text messages he sent her. She also showed a text where she said, "I want to kill her, Caleb." She claimed she regretted saying that. But in response to this message, she showed that Flynn had texted back saying, "I want to kill her, Caleb."
Six months before his wife's murder, Flynn texted Botner in August 2025, where he wrote, "I was up until 4 am last night crying, literally trying to think of ways to kill her and not go to jail," AP reported.
"I'm not asking that you take her life obviously, because that's not what you should do, and I know you actually wouldn't. But to make the divorce happen, it would change everything," Botner had texted.
"I believe he murdered his wife," Botner told the court as per the report.
Ashley Flynn: An educator, coach and mother
Caleb Flynn's late wife, Ashley Flynn, was a school teacher and volleyball coach. She used to coach children of middle at Tipp City Schools, which described her as having a "beautiful smile, warmth, kindness, and the positive impact". As per the information gathered via the internet, AP reported that the Tipp City High School and Lee University graduate also volunteered at her church, Christian Life Centre.
On the day of her murder, Flynn allegedly staged a home invasion to mislead investigators. He dialled 911 and said that a burglar had shot his wife. Flynn and their two daughters were home when police arrived.
