JYP Entertainment confirmed that Stray Kids did not submit any work for consideration at the 2027 Grammys, after BTS announced its boycott amid Asian Pop category debate

Stray Kids are the latest K-pop group to skip the 2027 Grammy Awards, following the lead of BTS after the group didn't submit any music for consideration before the August 21 deadline. JYP Entertainment said the eight-member band refrained from submitting an entry for the 69th Grammy Awards, but did not provide a reason or say if the decision was related to the Recording Academy's new Best Asian Pop Music Performance category. The move comes just hours after Grammy boss Harvey Mason Jr. confirmed the controversial new category will go ahead at the 2027 ceremony despite debate within the Asian music community.

Stray Kids didn't submit music for Grammys

To be eligible for Grammy consideration, recordings must be entered formally into the awards process. Music not submitted will not appear on the nomination screening ballot and will not advance to the voting stage.

JYP Entertainment announced on October 2 that Stray Kids did not submit any work for consideration for the 2027 Grammys. The agency did not elaborate on the group's choice. It also didn't verify whether the move was related to the recently added Asian Pop category.

Stray Kids comprise Bang Chan, Lee Know, Changbin, Hyunjin, Han, Felix, Seungmin and I.N.

Why are Stray Kids skipping the Grammys?

The group's announcement comes as the Recording Academy's new Best Asian Pop Music Performance category continues to be a topic of conversation. The category was announced in June 2026 as one of five new awards being added for the 69th Grammys. The Recording Academy says it is intended to recognise the artistic excellence of Asian pop performances that are based in or have established a large following in Asian markets, including K-pop, J-pop and C-pop, with significant use of one or more Asian languages.

Some critics say that singling out Asian pop could put the artists at a disadvantage in the Grammys' general categories. Supporters meanwhile have seen the category as an opportunity to give greater visibility to music from across Asia.

What did Stray Kids say about Grammys before?

The group had been asked about its Grammy plans at an August press conference in Seoul for its 10th EP, This & That. The members did not directly confirm whether they would be submitting music. In response to a question about the new Asian Pop category, Seungmin pointed out the group's creative priorities, while Hyunjin noted that awards and chart records had never been the group's primary focus. "The group's priority is its fans and their satisfaction with Stray Kids' music," Hyunjin pointed out.

All eight Stray Kids members are Grammy voters

The decision is particularly notable because all eight Stray Kids members received invitations this year to join the Recording Academy as voting members. That means Bang Chan, Lee Know, Changbin, Hyunjin, Han, Felix, Seungmin and I.N can participate in the Grammy voting process despite choosing not to submit their own music for consideration.

The development therefore separates their role as Recording Academy voters from their decision not to enter their own recordings.

BTS had already announced its Grammy withdrawal

Stray Kids' decision follows a similar move by BTS. The K-pop power group had in July announced that all seven members will not submit their music for consideration at the 69th Grammy Awards. The group said they hoped their music could be "heard and loved for what it is, not divided by region or language."

BTS has been nominated for five Grammys but has never won the award. The band's decision came shortly after the Recording Academy announced the Asian Pop category.

News of Stray Kids came shortly after Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. confirmed the Best Asian Pop Music Performance category would go ahead at the 2027 ceremony. The Academy said it received a "robust" number of submissions in the category's first year.

BTS and Stray Kids have both decided not to submit their music, but the category will debut anyway. Nominations for the 2027 Grammy Awards will be revealed in November, with the 69th Grammy Awards scheduled for February 7, 2027.
