There's a new box-office king in 2026. James Cameron's Avatar is no longer the top film in the world. After its re-release ahead of the release of Avengers: Doomsday in December 2026, Avengers: Endgame was re-released in theatres with extra footage to fill the gap between the films. On its second weekend in theatres, the re-release of Endgame's worldwide gross with $2.925 billion has officially surpassed that of Avatar. Over the years, the films have kept a healthy competition for the title of high-grossing film with each re-release, but this time, Endgame has both the crown and the momentum.
Avengers Endgame is the highest-grossing film of all time
According to a report in Variety, the 2019 film has officially crossed the $2.925 billion mark globally on its second weekend. Avatar (2009), written and directed by James Cameron, has grossed $2.923 billion worldwide after five re-releases. It has now reclaimed its crown as the highest-grossing film. Avengers Endgame: Encore contains new footage with the superheroes, a special introduction for fans, and a new post-credits scene, which adds an extra two more minutes to the running time. Either way, both films are Disney features, so the studio holds both spots in the list of all-time worldwide grossers.
The rivalry between the films began in 2019 after the release of Endgame. Before that, Avatar enjoyed sitting in the top spot as the biggest Hollywood film of all time for nearly a decade. Endgame took over the number one position in 2019 but lost it in 2021 after Avatar's re-release ahead of Avatar: The Way of Water's premiere. Now five years later, it has retaken the title from the Cameron film.
More about Marvel and the Avengers saga
The 2019 film Endgame had the biggest assembly of superheroes, but that will change with Doomsday's release on December 18, 2026. With the return of Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr to Marvel Studios, Doomsday is projected to be the biggest film of the year. Endgame directors Anthony and Joe Russo are also returning to direct Doomsday, which will be the 39th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Besides the original Avengers gang, characters from the Fantastic Four, Thunderbolts and even Fox's X-Men will be showing up to fight Doctor Doom (Downey Jr) in the upcoming film. Despite the film not releasing in IMAX, as Dune: Part Three has already booked them, Doomsday might end up breaking some records previously held by Endgame and Avatar.
