Gujarat plans to install rooftop solar systems on 15,000 additional government buildings this financial year, adding around 65 MW of capacity with ₹314 crore earmarked for the programme.
Gujarat is planning a major expansion of rooftop solar across its government buildings, targeting installations on 15,000 additional buildings this financial year that will add 65 MW of new solar capacity to its public infrastructure.
The expansion follows the state's installation of rooftop solar systems on 1,377 government buildings during FY 26, adding 17.1 MW of capacity. With this, the cumulative number of government buildings covered under the programme reached 6,014 by March 2026, with total installed capacity touching 95 MW, the state government said in an official release on Monday.
15,000 more government buildings targeted
"The biggest expansion of installation of rooftop solar systems on government buildings is taking place this year as we plan to install on 15,000 government buildings. The proposed expansion is expected to add around 65 MW of solar capacity," Gujarat Climate Change Minister Arjun Modhwadia stated in the release. The state has earmarked ₹314 crore for the programme in FY 27. Of this, ₹278 crore has been allocated for general government buildings, ₹3 crore for buildings under the Social Justice and Empowerment Department and ₹33 crore for buildings managed by the Tribal Development Department, according to Dharmendra Patel, Director, Gujarat Energy Development Agency (GEDA).
The programme, implemented by GEDA under the Climate Change Department since 2011-12, provides 100% capital-cost support for installing rooftop solar systems on buildings under the Gujarat government. The expansion aims to reduce government buildings' dependence on conventional electricity, cut power expenditure, and increase the use of renewable energy across public infrastructure.
IIoT-based system to monitor installations
Alongside the capacity expansion, Gujarat has introduced an Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT)-based Renewable Energy Monitoring System to track renewable energy installations on government buildings. The system uses smart meters, sensors and IoT gateways connected through GPRS, 4G and Ethernet networks. It captures performance data every 15 minutes, generating up to 96 readings a day, and can send automated remote alerts when required. "The system's robust infrastructure integrates smart meters, sensors, and IoT gateways connected via GPRS, 4G, and Ethernet. It delivers automated remote alerts and captures performance data every 15 minutes, generating up to 96 daily readings," Modhwadia added.
The monitoring interface currently tracks significant renewable generation capacity, including 142.5 MW of solar and 68.3 MW of wind generation, the minister said. The move is expected to give the state a centralised view of renewable energy generation and system performance, while allowing remote identification of potential faults or performance issues.
Gujarat leads in renewable energy capacity
According to the latest data from the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Gujarat has an installed renewable energy capacity of 47,178 MW, putting it ahead of Rajasthan and at the top nationally, the release added.
