The 57th meeting of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council, originally scheduled for October 7, has been postponed to October 8 due to "unavoidable circumstances", according to an Office Memorandum issued by the GST Council Secretariat on Monday. The meeting will be held from 11 am onwards at the Summit Room, Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. The memorandum, dated October 5, was issued with the approval of the Revenue Secretary, who is also the ex-officio Secretary to the GST Council. The Secretariat has requested that the change in schedule be brought to the attention of members of the GST Council. The Council, chaired by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and comprising state finance ministers, is set to meet after more than a year. The 56th GST Council meeting was held on September 3-4, 2025, during which the Centre and states decided on a major restructuring of Goods and Services Tax (GST) rates and slabs. Effective September 22, 2025, GST was changed to a two-tier structure of 5% and 18%, with a highest 40% rate for ultra-luxury and sin goods. This replaced the four slabs of 5%, 12%, 18% and 28% that had been in place since July 1, 2017.
