It was early in the morning and coach Sjoerd Marijne was up. His team had done the unthinkable last night and won gold beating China. They reached back around 230am and had to leave for the airport around 1045am. We had planned to speak before that and as has always been the case, he messaged on time saying he was ready. As we got speaking, a few key things came up. On infusing new blood in the team Marijne was clear, "You have to do it. Unless there is competition for spots you can never really push the bar. At times it is not very good for players but so be it. You need to keep the talent pool going for only then can you build a strong team. And that's what I have tried to do. On having a plan B- "If you see what happened yesterday you will have noticed our defensive shape was very good. And let me tell you we were ready for the shootout. In fact, we had trained for it. We knew that if needed we could take the match to the shootout and could win from there. It is not just plan A or B it is also about plan C and D. You need to be ready with your plans backed by data to ensure you are not surprised by anything. On how things changed for the team- "The first thing is you play for the team. You can be a brilliant individual player but unless you play for the team in a team sport you don't really add any value to the collective. That was my first message to the girls. And we did ring in the changes. Individuals are only good if they add to the team and that's something we have added to the culture of this team. On the way ahead- "We now have the time to get ready for LA 28. Only the Netherlands, the hosts USA and us are the three that have qualified. This gives us a huge heads up. We can now work on many things. We know our defensive formation is good and we will now work on the attack. So it makes a real difference that we now have the time to get ready for the Olympic Games. Credit to the players and the staff for making it happen".
