Interest rate: This is the percentage charged by the lender for borrowing the money. Personal-loan rates can vary depending on the lender, loan amount, tenure and your credit profile. A strong CIBIL score can improve your chances of approval, but it does not guarantee a particular rate. Compare the actual offer you receive rather than relying only on an advertised "starting" rate. Annual Percentage Rate or APR: The interest rate alone does not always tell you the full cost of borrowing. APR is designed to show the annualised cost of credit, including relevant charges. For digital loans, RBI's framework requires regulated entities to disclose the all-inclusive cost through APR. This makes it easier to see what you are actually paying rather than judging an offer only by its headline interest rate. Loan tenure: This is the period over which you repay the loan. A longer tenure usually reduces the monthly EMI, which can make the loan easier to fit into a household budget. But it also means paying interest for longer and can increase the total cost. Before accepting an offer, calculate both the EMI and the total amount payable over the entire tenure. EMI: Your equated monthly instalment combines principal and interest and is normally paid on a fixed date each month. CIBIL notes that calculating the EMI beforehand can help borrowers plan their monthly budget. Do not choose an EMI simply because the lender says you are eligible for it; leave enough room for rent, household expenses, insurance, savings and unexpected costs. Processing and other charges: The interest rate is not the only expense attached to a personal loan. Processing fees, late-payment charges, documentation costs and other applicable fees can increase the effective cost. RBI's Key Facts Statement format requires lenders to provide important information such as the loan amount, tenure, interest rate and applicable fees, including charges connected with foreclosure. Read this document before signing rather than relying on a sales representative's verbal explanation. Prepayment or foreclosure: If you have extra money later, you may want to repay the loan early. But the terms governing part-prepayment or full foreclosure can vary, so check them before borrowing. RBI's regulatory framework also requires transparent disclosure of charges and options related to foreclosure, particularly for relevant floating-rate EMI-based personal loans. There is one more number worth keeping in mind: your existing debt. Lenders assess income, credit history and repayment obligations when deciding whether to approve an unsecured personal loan. Taking a large loan while already juggling several EMIs can leave little room for emergencies and increase the risk of missed payments. A personal loan should therefore be compared as a complete package, not simply by asking which lender offers the lowest rate. Check the APR, EMI, tenure, fees and early-repayment rules together. That few minutes spent reading the terms can make the difference between a manageable loan and an expensive financial commitment.
