Why is there a sudden increase in sugar prices? | Explained

Retail and wholesale sugar prices rose by about 40% compared to last year, with some states seeing rates hit ₹65 a kg. The government said it is monitoring the situation closely. To help, the Union Commerce Ministry allowed the import of 10 lakh tonnes of sugar until October 31, 2026.
