Vande Mataram and the right to dissent

Parliament gave Vande Mataram the same criminal-law protection as the national anthem. On January 24, 1950, Dr. Rajendra Prasad said the song shall be honoured equally with Jana Gana Mana. This decision followed a 1937 Congress compromise to avoid religious idioms in civic life, keeping the state neutral and inclusive.
