A Town 'Erased' for a Dam: How a Forgotten Sacrifice Became a Sanctuary for Generations
In 1942, the federal government moved Coldwater for the Arkabutla Dam project. The town shifted one mile south to make way for the reservoir, which the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers completed in 1943. Eighty-four years later, the lake is used for fishing, hunting, and important habitat conservation efforts.
