Parliament gives Vande Mataram legal protection, rekindling debate over its legacy

Parliament passed a bill on Thursday giving Vande Mataram legal protection against insults. The new law makes disturbing its rendition a criminal offence punishable by up to three years in jail. Minister Nityananda Rai said, "For Ek Bharat, Shreshtra Bharat, we need the complete Vande Mataram song," during the heated debate.
