SC issues notice to Centre on plea to ban polygamy

The Supreme Court on July 31, 2026, issued a notice to the Centre regarding a plea to ban polygamy. The petition seeks to make bigamy laws uniform for all citizens. It said, “Many Muslim-majority countries have moved away from unrestricted polygamy,” and urged the government to ensure better gender equality.
