A new bill makes insulting Vande Mataram a punishable offence, giving the song the same status as the national anthem. The law amends the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971. While the government said this promotes nationalism, many feel patriotism should grow naturally without the law’s heavy hand.
