Thirty-six recreational athletes showed significant drops in resting energy expenditure during weight loss studies. Researchers found that even when these athletes gained fat-free mass through resistance training and protein, their energy use still fell more than expected. These findings show that muscle growth does not stop metabolic changes during dieting.
